St Bernard of Clairvaux
Born near Dijon, Burgundy 1090, died 1153 in Clairvaux , Champagne aged 63 Bernard was born into a landowning Christian family, where faith was taken seriously. His faith developed in such a way that he entered a religious Benedictine community. He entered the community at the time several monks from the Benedictine abbey in Molesme, eastern France were not satisfied in the way the Rule of Benedict was being practised. This group sought a more solitary life within a stricter observance of the Rule of St Benedict.
