Strata Marcella to Llanllugan Abbey

This tablet in a field off the A483 Welshpool to Oswestry road is all that marks the site of the Abbey of Ystrad Marchell, Strata Marcella. (From the Latin strata meaning paved road or causeway and Marcella after Marchell, a sister of the fifth or sixth century saint Tyfrydog) We are able from documentary and archaeological findings to know that the Cistercian monastery was founded by Owain Cyfeiliog prince of southern Powys in 1170. It was not, however until the 14th century that the church was completed.
