‘Wealth is worth nothing in the grave’

Reflection on Psalm 49

John Eaton in Psalms for Life uses Sherlock Holmes as an introduction to Psalm 49. Picture the scene, Holmes, the Consulting Detective, in his rooms at 221b Baker Street he engrossed in solving the mystery, a riddle that troubles him, and he turns to his violin and as he plays ‘a gleam of discernment shone through the dark puzzle’. Eaton moves on to create the image of the Psalmist playing their lyre as they worked to get the right melody to accompany the riddle that is at the heart of this psalm.

Give ear, all inhabitants of the world, Both low and high,
Rich and poor together.
My mouth shall speak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart shall give understanding. I will incline my ear to a proverb;
I will disclose my dark saying on the harp. (NKJV)
